The essentials

What is Bahasa Indonesia (BIPA track) for Malaysia-based learners?

Learn Bahasa Indonesia (BIPA) in Malaysia

BIPA: Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing, is the official Indonesian-government framework for teaching Bahasa Indonesia to non-native speakers. It is curated by Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa (Badan Bahasa) under Kemendikbudristek RI, deployed at Indonesian universities (UI, UGM, ITB, Unpad, UPI), at Indonesian Cultural Centres abroad including Pusat Kebudayaan Indonesia (Puski) at KBRI Kuala Lumpur, and benchmarked against UKBI Adaptif Merdeka, the seven-tier Indonesian-language proficiency test (Istimewa 725–800 → Terbatas 251–325). For Malaysian learners specifically, BIPA is the 'kembar tak serupa' track: spoken Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia share ~80% mutual intelligibility, but formal and written registers diverge sharply (PUEBM vs EYD V, syarikat vs perusahaan, kereta vs mobil, RM vs Rp). This course is designed for Malaysia-resident learners who need accurate, register-correct BI for Indonesian market entry, Darmasiswa scholarship applications, IMT-GT cross-border trade, or daily life with an Indonesian spouse or business counterparty.

  • 01BIPA curriculum under Badan Bahasa (Kemendikbudristek RI)
  • 02KBBI VI Daring and EYD V (2022) as the standard reference set
  • 03UKBI Adaptif Merdeka prep, 7 tiers (Istimewa → Terbatas)

  • 05Darmasiswa Beasiswa RI application + interview prep (KBRI KL channel)
  • 06IMT-GT and Indonesia-market business register (surat resmi, MoU, negosiasi)
Curriculum

What we cover

Three modules mapped to BIPA syllabus, with a BM-BI delta module first for Malaysian native-BM learners and optional UKBI Adaptif Merdeka prep at the end.

Module 1: BM-BI Delta Orientation (Malaysian-track, 3 months)

For native Bahasa Melayu speakers. Switches the brain from PUEBM to EYD V, vocabulary swap, register shift, honorific change, currency, time, transport.

Vocabulary delta drills: kereta → mobil, syarikat → perusahaan, pejabat → kantor, duit → uang, kerana → karena, tandas → kamar mandi; honorifics: Encik/Puan/Cik → Bapak/Ibu/Mbak/Mas; currency RM → Rp Rupiah; time 'pukul 8 pagi' → 'jam 8 pagi'; food register: nasi lemak → nasi uduk, teh tarik → teh manis; EYD V vs PUEBM orthography divergence (diftong eu, monoftong, pepet ê); KBBI lookup workflow; reading Tempo / Kompas headlines; listening to Metro TV / Kompas TV anchors.

Module 2: General BI Proficiency (BIPA A1 → B1, 6–12 months)

Core BIPA syllabus mapped to A1, A2, B1 from Badan Bahasa. Imbuhan refresh, register correctness, conversational Indonesian.

BIPA Tingkat Pemula (A1): salam, perkenalan, angka, waktu Jakarta-WIB, alamat, tawar-menawar di pasar tradisional. BIPA Tingkat Madya (A2-B1): imbuhan ber-, di-, me-, ter-, pe-, ke-an, per-an drilled in BI register (notice 'mengaji' vs 'belajar' usage differs from MY); past/present/future markers (sudah, sedang, akan, telah, lagi); cultural fluency: Lebaran, mudik, gotong-royong; Jakarta dialect vs Standard BI; reading Kompas online + Tirto explanatory articles; listening to Podcast Sebatas Karya / Endgame; writing diary and informal email in BI.

Module 3: Professional + UKBI Certification (12–24 months)

BIPA Tingkat Mahir (B2-C1) with focus on Indonesian business register, government register, and UKBI Adaptif Merdeka certification.

Surat resmi format (Kepada Yth., Bapak/Ibu, Hormat saya); MoU and kontrak kerja sama (cross-border IMT-GT context); presentation BI; reading Bisnis Indonesia and Kontan; meeting minutes (notulen rapat); EYD V advanced (foreign-loan transliteration, diftong, monoftong); UKBI Adaptif Merdeka five sections drilled: Mendengarkan (Listening), Merespon Kaidah (Grammar Response), Membaca (Reading), Menulis (Writing), Berbicara (Speaking); target tier Madya 482–577 for casual users, Unggul 578–640 for professional users, Sangat Unggul 641+ for academic users; Darmasiswa scholarship essay drafting and KBRI KL interview prep.

Good to know

Things parents ask us first

  • Spoken 80% / written 60%, the delta is bigger than it sounds

Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia share roughly 80% of spoken core vocabulary, but formal and written registers only overlap around 60%. A Malaysian who reads a Kompas business article cold will miss critical words: 'kantor' (office) is not 'pejabat', 'perusahaan' (company) is not 'syarikat', 'mobil' (car) is not 'kereta' (which means 'train' in BI). The first three months of this course are dedicated specifically to closing the formal-register gap so you do not embarrass yourself in a Jakarta board meeting.

  • EYD V (2022) replaced PUEBI 2015, your textbook may be outdated

On 16 August 2022, Kepmendikbudristek No. 0424/I/BS.00.01/2022 issued EYD V: Ejaan yang Disempurnakan Edisi V, replacing PUEBI 2015. Key changes: clarified monoftong/diftong rules (eu, ai, au, oi), reintroduction of dotted 'ê' for the pepet vowel, capitalisation revisions, updated foreign-word transliteration tables. Many older Indonesian textbooks sold in Malaysia still teach PUEBI. Our tutors teach EYD V as default; we flag PUEBI-era spellings as legacy and not for new writing.

  • Darmasiswa Beasiswa RI, annual Feb-Apr application via KBRI KL

Beasiswa Darmasiswa Republik Indonesia is the Kemendikbudristek-funded 1-year non-degree scholarship for foreign nationals to study Bahasa Indonesia, seni tari, seni musik, seni rupa, or kerajinan tangan at 73 partner universities including Universitas Indonesia (UI Depok), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM Yogyakarta), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad), and Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI). Application window typically Feb-Apr each year; Malaysian applicants apply through Kedutaan Besar Republik Indonesia (KBRI) Kuala Lumpur at 233 Jalan Tun Razak. We help with essay drafting, interview prep, and conversational confidence at A2-B1 level.

  • IMT-GT corridor: Indonesia is MY's biggest ASEAN trade partner

Malaysia and Indonesia established diplomatic ties in 1957 and co-founded ASEAN in 1967 (Bangkok Declaration). Bilateral trade exceeded USD 24 billion in 2022 (MITI MY data). The IMT-GT (Indonesia–Malaysia–Thailand Growth Triangle, est. 1993, secretariat CIMT in Putrajaya) covers 10 Sumatran provinces, 8 northern MY states, and 14 southern Thai provinces. If you trade across this corridor, palm oil, halal goods, tourism, fintech, accurate Bahasa Indonesia (not BM-flavoured BI) buys credibility with Jakarta counterparties. Module 3 covers IMT-GT business register specifically.

  • KBBI is the dictionary, not Kamus Dewan

When tutor and learner disagree on a word, the BIPA tie-breaker is KBBI (Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia) VI Daring at kbbi.kemdikbud.go.id, maintained by Pusat Pengembangan dan Pelindungan Bahasa dan Sastra under Badan Bahasa. Do not check Kamus Dewan. It codifies Bahasa Melayu, which is a sibling but separate standard. Cross-checking with the wrong dictionary produces hybrid 'Bahasa Melindo' nobody actually speaks.

For Whom

Who BIPA tuition at Edustar Malaysia is for

Four real Malaysia-resident profiles we match BIPA tutors to.

Malaysian professionals expanding into the Indonesian market

Bankers, consultants, palm-oil traders, fintech founders, lawyers at MY firms with active Jakarta or Surabaya engagement. Need register-correct BI for Bisnis Indonesia / Kontan / Tempo reading, surat resmi, MoU drafting, and Jakarta board-meeting fluency.

  • Embarrassing BM-flavoured BI in Jakarta meetings
  • MoU and kontrak kerja sama drafting in EYD V
  • Reading Bisnis Indonesia and OJK regulations cold
  • Honorific switch: Encik → Bapak in client calls

Malaysian students applying Beasiswa Darmasiswa RI

Undergraduates and recent graduates targeting the 1-year Darmasiswa programme at UI, UGM, ITB, Unpad, or UPI. Annual Feb-Apr application window via KBRI Kuala Lumpur. Need conversational A2-B1 BI for the interview and essay, plus academic register for the Indonesian campus.

  • Essay drafting in EYD V standard
  • KBRI Kuala Lumpur interview confidence
  • Reading Indonesian-university course material
  • Adapting to Jakarta or Yogyakarta campus culture

Expats in Malaysia with Indonesia-facing roles

Non-Malaysian, non-Indonesian executives based in KL or Penang whose work covers both markets, regional ASEAN heads, fund managers, country GMs for Indonesia-MY mandate. They already speak some Bahasa Melayu and need to register-shift to BI without unlearning BM.

  • Code-switching cleanly between BM and BI
  • Avoiding hybrid 'Melindo' that confuses both sides
  • Reading Tempo and Berita Harian side by side
  • Email salutations matching counterparty country

IMT-GT cross-border traders and partners of Indonesian spouses

Northern-MY-based traders (Penang, Kedah, Perlis) doing Sumatra / Riau / Aceh trade under the IMT-GT corridor, plus Malaysians married to Indonesian nationals who need fluent in-law and household BI for kampung visits, Lebaran mudik, and child schooling decisions if the family moves to Indonesia.

  • Sumatra trade vocabulary (palm oil, fishery, tourism)
  • Conversation with Indonesian mertua / in-laws
  • Lebaran mudik etiquette and salutation
  • Reading Indonesian school notices and child documents
How It Works

From first call to first lesson

How starting BIPA tuition with Edustar works.

  1. 1

    Free needs assessment

We ask: are you a native Bahasa Melayu speaker switching to BI, a Darmasiswa applicant, an expat with both markets, or an IMT-GT trader? Target UKBI tier and timeline.

    ~15 min
  2. 2

Diagnostic call in BI + BM + English

The tutor runs a 20-minute call mixing BI, BM and English to find your real starting point. We tell a 'true BI' baseline apart from 'BM-flavoured BI', so Module 1 closes the gap that is genuinely there rather than a phantom one.

    Before lesson 1
  3. 3

    Tutor matching

We match by track: a native Indonesian BIPA-certified tutor for Darmasiswa and academic learners; a bilingual MY-resident BI tutor for BM-BI delta work; and for corporate cohorts, a trainer registered with HRD Corp.
