The role

What you do as an online economics tutor

  • Teach microeconomics and macroeconomics one-to-one, following the syllabus each learner sits: STPM Economics 944 across its three semesters, SPM Ekonomi in Form 4โ€“5, Cambridge A-Level 9708, IGCSE 0455 or IB Economics SL and HL.
  • Build each learner's diagram fluency: drawing, labelling and shifting demand, supply and cost curves until they can produce an accurate graph under exam timing.
  • Coach data-response questions using real figures, so learners practise reading a table or chart, quoting the numbers and explaining the trend behind them.
  • Develop evaluative essays, from planning the argument in a shared document to judging policy choices such as an OPR change or a tax adjustment with a clear conclusion.
  • Build your own materials for each learner: worksheets of diagram drills, a plan for every lesson and past-paper questions to work through. After each session, jot down a brief progress note so the learner can see the next target.

What we look for

  • A degree, diploma or strong exam results in economics or a closely related field such as finance, business or accounting.
  • Solid command of both microeconomics and macroeconomics for every level you plan to teach, whether SPM, A-Level, STPM or IB.
  • The ability to draw and explain economic diagrams clearly in real time, and to mark an essay against the evaluation the exam rewards.
  • Comfort teaching online with a whiteboard, screen sharing and shared documents, plus your own computer, webcam, headset and reliable connection.
  • Clear spoken and written English; fluency in Bahasa Melayu is a plus for learners who sit SPM Ekonomi in Malay.
  • Reliable availability on Malaysian time, in Malaysia or abroad, for the regular weekly slots you commit to.
Pay

Hourly pay for online STPM and A-Level economics

RM25 to RM70 per hour

This range applies to online economics sessions for STPM Tingkatan 6 and Cambridge A-Level candidates. The rate for each match, whether the work centres on macro essays or data-response drills, is written into that offer, so it sits in front of you while you decide.

Why teach online

Why economics teaches so well online

Online economics tutor jobs at Edustar connect you with Form 6, pre-university and foundation learners sitting STPM Economics 944, Cambridge A-Level 9708, IGCSE 0455 and IB Economics. Each session is live and one-to-one: you sketch the diagrams, put Malaysian data on screen and coach the essays that carry the marks.

  • 1A digital whiteboard lets you draw a demand curve, shift it and mark the new equilibrium while the learner watches each step, then save the finished diagram for revision.
  • 2Current Malaysian material sits one click away. A Bank Negara Malaysia statement on the Overnight Policy Rate or a fresh DOSM release can go straight onto the screen as case material for that evening's essay.
  • 3Learners across Malaysia take economics at Form 6, pre-university and foundation level, and online lessons let you reach them in any state from your own desk, at home or abroad.
  • 4Part-time hours fit around your own work. Weekday evenings and weekends see the steadiest demand from economics learners, the timetable follows Malaysian time (UTC+8), and you accept only the slots that suit you.
Your online classroom

The online classroom economics needs

  • So that a multiplier derivation or an elasticity calculation reaches the learner clearly, you need a webcam, a headset with its own mic and a computer on a reliable internet line.
  • A digital whiteboard for drawing and shifting demand, supply and cost curves live, labelling shaded areas such as consumer surplus or deadweight loss as you go.
  • A pen tablet for clean diagrams; graph work drawn freehand with a pen reads far better than shapes dragged with a mouse.
  • A shared document for essay plans and written feedback, plus the habit of sharing news articles and data charts on screen, from OPR decisions and SST changes to ringgit exchange rate moves.

One online economics hour, from homework check to final note

The lesson opens on the learner's own work. A data-response answer uploaded the evening before already sits in the shared document, and the tutor has marked the single sentence where the reasoning broke, often the step between a price change and its effect on quantity demanded. The learner reads that sentence aloud and repairs it in their own words.

Around minute ten the whiteboard takes over. Picture a mill discharging waste into a river upstream of a town: the tutor draws marginal private cost, hands the pen to the learner to add marginal social cost above it, and both mark the output where society would want production to stop. The learner shades the welfare loss and names it.

The middle half hour belongs to timed practice. One essay question goes into the shared document, the clock runs, and the tutor follows the cursor live, typing short margin comments at the moments a definition is missing or a diagram is cited without being explained.

The final ten minutes settle the next step. Learner and tutor agree one target, such as labelling every axis or closing each paragraph with a judgement, and the session note carries that target forward.

Teaching the evaluation that STPM and A-Level examiners reward

Economics candidates at this level usually explain well and evaluate weakly. Their essays describe what a policy does and stop, leaving the higher marks untouched. Judgement is the hardest skill to pass through a screen, because it lives in the pause before a learner commits to a conclusion.

The technique that works online is a two-column table in the shared document. Take targeted fuel subsidies in Malaysia: the left column holds the argument, the right column holds the condition that decides how strong it is. Price elasticity of demand, the time lag before households adjust, how the savings are spent and who carries the burden all go into that right column.

Learners then rewrite each paragraph so it opens with the argument and ends with its condition. Colour helps on screen: the tutor highlights every evaluative phrase in green, and after a few weeks the learner sees at a glance whether a draft carries enough of it.

  • Magnitude: how large is the effect, and what sets its size?
  • Time: does the result hold in the short run and the long run alike?
  • Stakeholders: which group gains and which pays?
  • Starting point: does the state of the economy change the answer?

The economics learners who book lessons online

Form 6 students make up the core of this lane. STPM Economics runs across three terms, so a candidate who found microeconomics hard in the first term often books online support before the second term's macroeconomics begins, and candidates resitting a term paper look for focused practice on that one paper.

Cambridge A-Level learners at colleges across Klang Valley, Penang and Johor book online for essay coaching in the year before their papers. Private candidates who study outside a college timetable rely on a weekly tutor to keep the syllabus moving.

Adults are a steady group too. University first-years facing an introductory economics module, working professionals returning to study, and learners who took economics years ago and now need it for a degree all value a tutor who can meet them after office hours on a video call.

How progress in economics becomes visible between sessions

Diagrams make progress easy to see. Each saved whiteboard goes into a dated folder, so a learner can set the supply and demand sketch from the first week beside a recent one and see cleaner labels, correct axes and shifts drawn in the right direction.

Essays follow the same logic. Marked scripts stay in the shared document with comments attached, and the short note after every session records the target, the question attempted and what improved. Each note goes to the candidate and to anyone who signed them up. A candidate who wants a different economics tutor only has to ask, and Edustar brings in the new one free of charge.

Questions

Questions economics tutors ask

Which economics syllabi will I teach online?

Learners come to Edustar for STPM Economics 944, SPM Ekonomi, Cambridge AS and A Level Economics 9708, IGCSE Economics 0455 and IB Economics at both SL and HL. While building your profile, you pick the syllabi you know best, and the offers you receive follow those picks.

Can I teach Malaysian learners from outside Malaysia?

Yes. Tutors based in Malaysia and tutors living abroad can both apply for this online lane. Sessions are booked in UTC+8, Malaysian time, so compare the evening and weekend slots learners favour with your own time zone before you commit.

Do I need a pen tablet to teach economics online?

A pen tablet makes curve work far cleaner, and economics lessons lean heavily on diagrams. You bring your own kit: computer, webcam, headset with microphone, stable internet and a tablet or similar device for drawing on the whiteboard.

Who are the learners?

Mostly Form 6 students preparing for STPM, pre-university and foundation learners on A-Level or IB programmes, SPM candidates in Form 4โ€“5 and first-year university students who want support with introductory micro and macro modules.

How it works

How to start teaching economics online

  1. Step 01

    Apply in under a minute

Start on the short application form. It wants your name, an email address, a WhatsApp contact and where you currently live. Economics tutors can send it in any month of the year, and it costs nothing to apply.
