French Language Course in Malaysia
Structured French tuition mapped to the CEFR-based DELF A1-B2 and DALF C1-C2 ladder by France Éducation International, plus TEF for Quebec immigration. Tutors prepare IB DP French B, IGCSE 0520, Campus France Études en France routes, and KL hospitality / luxury workplace French. French is not a KPM SPM subject, so all serious paths run external.
What is French Language Course?

French (français) in Malaysia is taught entirely outside the KPM national syllabus: KSSM does NOT list French as an elective at SPM (the KPM foreign-language electives are Bahasa Arab 6321, Bahasa Cina 6354, Bahasa Tamil 6364, plus Iban / Kadazandusun / Punjabi). Serious French study in MY therefore runs on three external ladders. (1) The CEFR ladder by the Council of Europe (Strasbourg, 2001) (six levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) underpins every French diploma. (2) The academic ladder runs through France Éducation International (formerly CIEP, under the French Ministry of National Education) which issues the DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) at A1-B2 and the DALF (Diplôme approfondi en langue française) at C1-C2; each level is an independent lifetime-valid diploma. (3) The Canadian immigration ladder uses the TEF (Test d'évaluation de français) by CCI Paris Île-de-France, accepted by IRCC for Express Entry and required at NCLC 7 (CEFR B2) for the Quebec Programme de sélection des travailleurs qualifiés (PSTQ). The official Malaysian channel is Alliance Française Kuala Lumpur (15 Lorong Gurney, Bukit Tunku, est. 1961) (the only DELF/DALF exam centre) supported by Campus France Malaysia at the French Embassy for the Études en France visa platform.
- 01DELF A1-B2 + DALF C1-C2 by France Éducation International, lifetime-valid diplomas
- 02TEF Canada by CCI Paris IDF, Quebec PSTQ minimum NCLC 7 (CEFR B2) for principal applicant
- 03Alliance Française KL (Lorong Gurney, Bukit Tunku, since 1961) is Malaysia's official DELF/DALF centre
- 04Campus France Malaysia runs the mandatory Études en France pre-application + DELF B2 baseline
- 05IB DP French B SL/HL and IGCSE French 0520 / 7156 for international-school candidates
- 06French is NOT a KPM SPM subject: KSSM electives stop at Arab 6321, Cina 6354, Tamil 6364

Module 2 — Intermediate (DELF B1 → B2, ~200-400h cumulative)
6-24 months from zero. Conversational fluency, hospitality + workplace scenarios, study-abroad readiness, and DELF B1 / B2 paper drilling. Target: pass DELF B2, the Campus France entry floor for French universities and the Quebec PSTQ TEF threshold.
Imparfait vs passé composé contrast; subjonctif présent and passé; conditionnel présent and passé; pronoms relatifs (qui, que, dont, où); discours rapporté; advanced vocabulary for travel, hospitality, business, news; DELF B1 (Compréhension de l'oral and écrits + Production écrite essai 160-180 mots + Production orale 15 min monologue suivi + interaction); DELF B2 (synthèse, essai argumenté, exposé 20 min); TEF / TEF Canada paper structure (compréhension orale + écrite + expression écrite + expression orale); Campus France Études en France 12-step procedure; Bvlgari / LVMH / Air France KL hospitality scripts.

Things parents ask us first
DELF A1 → B2 hour-investment ladder, budget realistically
France Éducation International publishes guideline contact-hour ranges per CEFR level for adult learners with no prior French. Realistic Malaysian-context budget at 2x 90-minute lessons per week plus daily 30-minute self-drill: DELF A1 ~60-100h (3-4 months), DELF A2 ~150-200h cumulative (6-8 months), DELF B1 ~300-350h cumulative (12-15 months), DELF B2 ~400-600h cumulative (18-24 months). Anyone selling a 'B2 in 3 months' package without prior Romance-language exposure is overpromising, even immersive Alliance Française intensive runs B2 in 6 months minimum.
Quebec PR / Canada Express Entry: TEF NCLC 7 (CEFR B2) is the floor, not the comfortable target
Under the Programme de sélection des travailleurs qualifiés (PSTQ, in effect since Nov 2024), the Quebec principal applicant must score TEF Canada NCLC 7 (≈ CEFR B2) in oral production AND oral comprehension as a hard prerequisite, written components are points-only. NCLC 7 = TEF score 524-548 on the oral. Most candidates aim for NCLC 8-9 (CEFR B2-C1, TEF 549-698) to clear with margin. Express Entry to other provinces accepts NCLC 7 across all four skills but awards more CRS points at NCLC 9+. Budget ≥18 months of structured tuition from zero before booking the TEF.
Alliance Française KL vs private 1-to-1, decision rule
Alliance Française Kuala Lumpur (Lorong Gurney, Bukit Tunku, est. 1961) runs structured 60-hour modular group classes at typical RM 1,500-2,000 per module and is the official DELF/DALF exam centre. Pick AF group when you want cohort accountability + the official exam venue. Pick Edustar 1-to-1 when: (a) your schedule cannot lock to AF's fixed timetable, (b) you need targeted exam drilling (DELF B2 synthèse, TEF oral, DALF essai) at your own pace, (c) you are coming from prior French (school, exchange, partner) and need a custom plateau-break plan rather than restarting at A1. Many serious candidates do both, AF for the cohort + Edustar 1-to-1 for the gap closing.
French phonics for English-speakers, nasal vowels and liaison are the early walls
Adult Malaysian learners coming from English (and Bahasa Melayu / Mandarin / Tamil) typically hit four phonics walls in the first 30 hours. (1) Four nasal vowels: /ɑ̃/ (an / en), /ɔ̃/ (on), /ɛ̃/ (in / un /ein), /œ̃/ (un, in modern French often merging into /ɛ̃/), absent from English. (2) Liaison: silent terminal consonant pronounced before a vowel start (vous_avez, les_amis). (3) Élision: vowel dropping (je + ai → j'ai, le + ami → l'ami). (4) Stress on the last syllable of a rhythmic group, unlike English's word-internal stress. Tutors drill these via minimal-pair audio and structured reading. Plan ~30 hours of phonics-heavy work before pushing past A1.
Eiffel Excellence Scholarship: annual January deadline, French government's flagship MY-eligible award
The Eiffel Excellence Scholarship Program (Bourses d'excellence Eiffel) is run by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and managed by Campus France. Master's stipend €1,181/month + return flight + health cover; PhD €1,400/month for 12 months. Annual application deadline is early January for the following academic-year intake: selection by the host French institution, not direct individual application. Malaysian candidates are eligible across STEM, economics, law, political science, and humanities. DELF B2 is the practical floor for French-medium programmes; English-medium programmes at Sciences Po / HEC / INSEAD are also Eiffel-eligible.
Campus France Malaysia, Études en France is mandatory for student-visa applicants
Any Malaysian applying for a French long-stay student visa (VLS-TS) for higher education must complete the Campus France Études en France procedure at https://www.malaisie.campusfrance.org: a 12-step online portal including academic pre-evaluation, motivation letter, certified transcripts, and a mandatory Campus France pedagogical interview at the KL office (French Embassy compound). Without an Études en France 'attestation' the consulate will not process the visa. Plan 4-6 months ahead of the intended intake. DELF B2 is the floor for French-medium first-degree enrolment at most French public universities; English-medium programmes have separate language requirements.

We ask: are you IB DP French B, Campus France aspirant, Quebec PSTQ / Canada Express Entry, IGCSE Cambridge, or workplace French (hospitality / luxury / aviation)? Target CEFR level, target exam date, prior French exposure, weekly time budget.
~15 min - 2
Diagnostic call in French + English
Tutor runs a 20-minute mixed-French call (or full English if you are zero-baseline) to gauge your real starting CEFR. We don't assume A1: many learners arrive at A2 already from school French, partner exposure, or earlier Alliance Française modules.
Before lesson 1 - 3
Tutor matching
We match by track: DELF/DALF-experienced tutor for academic, TEF-experienced for Quebec PR, IB-trained for ISKL / Mont Kiara students, HRD-Corp-registered trainer for corporate teams. Where possible we prioritise native-speaker tutors; for rarer schedule slots, certified Malaysian DALF-C1+ tutors with proven teaching record.

Module 1, Beginner Survival (DELF A1 → A2)
Two 90-minute sessions per week. Phonics first (nasal vowels, liaison, élision), survival vocabulary second, A1 grammar third. Target DELF A1 around month 3-4, DELF A2 around month 6-8.

Where French fits in the Malaysian pathway
French is external to KPM: every step here runs through France Éducation International, Cambridge, or IB.
- 01
Year 1-6 (Primary)
French is not a KPM SJK / SK primary subject. Early exposure available at IB PYP / Cambridge Primary international schools or via private tuition. CEFR A1 floor possible by age 12 with consistent weekly lessons.
- 02
Form 1-3 (PT3 lower secondary)
Not a KSSM elective. Continued external study through IB MYP / IGCSE preparation at private schools or 1-to-1 tuition. Target CEFR A2 by Form 3.
- 03
Form 4-5 (SPM track)
French is NOT in the SPM subject list (KSSM foreign-language electives stop at Bahasa Arab 6321, Bahasa Cina 6354, Bahasa Tamil 6364). SPM students wanting French sit external DELF A2 / B1 via Alliance Française KL, there is no in-SPM credit option.
- 04
Form 6 (STPM + MUET) / Pre-U
STPM 3-semester syllabus does not include French. Form 6 students targeting Campus France in Form 6 will continue external DELF B1 → B2 drilling alongside STPM. Matrikulasi / A-Level / IB DP students at private institutions may take French as part of those alternative qualifications.
- 05
IB DP / IGCSE / Cambridge
IB DP French B SL / HL (ISKL, Mont Kiara, Marlborough, Garden) is the strongest in-school option. IGCSE French 0520 (Foreign Language) and 7156 (First Language) by Cambridge are offered at Tenby, Cempaka, Sri KL, ELC, Sayfol. HL outcomes typically map to CEFR B2-C1.
- 06
Adult / Professional / Migration
Adult learners enter at any CEFR level. Typical adult plans: DELF B2 in 18-24 months for Campus France or Quebec PSTQ; HSK 4-equivalent workplace French for KL luxury / hospitality / aviation; DALF C1 for senior translators or direct French-university admission. HRD Corp claimable where the employer is a PSMB contributor.
