What is Hindi Language Course (general)?

Hindi Language Course in Malaysia

Hindi is one of India's two official languages (Article 343 of the Indian Constitution) and the lingua franca of North India, with ~600 million speakers globally. It is written in Devanagari, an abugida descended from Brahmi (Unicode U+0900-U+097F), comprising 11 standalone vowels and 33 consonants organised in five varga rows. Spoken Hindi and spoken Urdu share a near-identical core (the Hindustani register heard in Bollywood films) but Hindi uses Devanagari and a Sanskritised written register, while Urdu uses Perso-Arabic Nastaliq script. Malaysians come to this general track for several reasons: SJK(T) Tamil-medium Indian-origin children add Hindi as a heritage or third language, Bollywood enthusiasts wanting to follow dialogue and song lyrics without subtitles, professionals trading with Indian counterparties under the India-Malaysia CECA (in force since 1 July 2011), and undergraduates preparing for India study or for the Kendriya Hindi Sansthan Praveen (intermediate) / Pragya (advanced) certificate examinations in Agra.

  • 01Devanagari script (U+0900-U+097F): 11 vowels + 33 consonants in 5 varga rows
  • 02Hindustani spoken core shared with Urdu, Bollywood dialogue is largely Hindustani
  • 03Kendriya Hindi Sansthan (KHS) Agra: Praveen (B1), Pragya (B2 / C1) certification track
  • 04ICCR PIO scholarship pathway available to Malaysian Indian-origin students
  • 05CECA India-Malaysia 2011, business-Hindi demand for trade with Indian counterparties
  • 061-to-1 in-person across Klang Valley, Penang, Johor Bahru, or online nationwide

What we cover

Three modules from Devanagari literacy to KHS Praveen / Pragya, with Bollywood-lyric drills and business-register add-on.

Module 1, Beginner: Devanagari + 500 words + greetings (A1)

First 3-4 months. Devanagari literacy in ~3 weeks at 20 min / day, then 500-word survival lexicon, greetings, family vocabulary, and core verb 'hona' (to be).

Devanagari abugida (vowels अ-औ, consonants क-ह, vowel signs / matra, conjuncts samyukt akshar); pronunciation drills (aspirated vs unaspirated क/ख, retroflex vs dental ट/त); namaste / namaskar register and salutation; family members (माता-पिता, भाई-बहन); numbers 1-100 (एक-सौ); days, months, time; basic verbs होना, करना, जाना, आना; postpositions (का / की / के, में, पर, से); ordering at Brickfields chaat stall in Hindi; survival 500-word core lexicon from Manak Hindi Kosh.

Module 2, Intermediate: 1500 words + grammar + Bollywood lyrics (B1)

Months 4-18. Hindustani conversational register, full tense system, Bollywood lyric analysis as fluency drill, and listening practice with Hindi news (DD News, NDTV India).

Three tenses (vartman / bhoot / bhavishya); compound verbs and aspect; honorific आप vs तू / तुम register choice; gender agreement (masculine / feminine noun + verb); Bollywood lyric breakdown (Lata Mangeshkar / Mohammed Rafi classics, Arijit Singh / Shreya Ghoshal modern); idioms and muhavare; listening practice with DD News / NDTV India / Aaj Tak; reading short stories (Premchand graded reader); Hindustani register sharing with Urdu for Bollywood comprehension; targeted prep for Kendriya Hindi Sansthan Praveen examination.

Module 3: Advanced: business, literary, KHS certification (B2 → C1)

Months 18-36. Business Hindi for India-MY CECA trade, literary register (Premchand, Mahadevi Verma), and full Pragya / Hindi Pracharak certification preparation.

Business Hindi for Indian counterparties (palm-oil, IT-BPO, pharma, automotive sectors under CECA 2011); meeting Hindi and email format; literary Hindi register (Premchand's गोदान / Godan, Mahadevi Verma's यामा, Mahatma Gandhi's हिंद स्वराज / Hind Swaraj); Sahitya Akademi Hindi Award shortlist as reading list; preparation for KHS Pragya (advanced) and Hindi Pracharak (teacher-track) certification; optional Devanagari calligraphy and shuddha sanskrit-shabdavali for literary depth; introduction to Sanskritised academic register for Indian-university entrance (JNU, BHU, Delhi University Hindi-medium streams).

Good to know

Things parents ask us first

  • Devanagari literacy lands in ~3 weeks

Devanagari is an abugida, every consonant carries an inherent /a/ vowel, with diacritics ('matra') for the other 10 vowels. Most adult learners at 20 minutes / day reach reading-fluency in ~3 weeks; full conjunct (samyukt akshar) confidence takes ~6 weeks. This is faster than Chinese Hanzi but slower than Korean Hangul. Plan your first month as 'read before you speak fast', pronunciation locks in once the script feels natural.

  • Hindi and Urdu share ~80% spoken vocabulary

If you already follow Bollywood dialogue, you have a head-start the SJK(T) Tamil-medium curriculum did not give you. The spoken register heard in mainstream Hindi cinema is technically Hindustani, the shared core of Hindi and Urdu. Hindi uses Devanagari and Sanskritised vocabulary in formal registers; Urdu uses Perso-Arabic Nastaliq script and Persianised vocabulary. For conversational fluency the two are mutually intelligible; for written and literary register they diverge sharply.

  • ICCR scholarship pathway for Indian-origin MY students

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) administers Hindi-track scholarships for foreign nationals and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO). For Malaysian Indian-origin students, typically traceable through SJK(T) Tamil-medium schooling and family records, this opens a fully-funded Hindi study route at Kendriya Hindi Sansthan Agra and the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Hindi (Wardha). We help applicants build the language-readiness needed before they sit the ICCR selection test.

  • Bollywood is a valid motivator, and a strong drill

Lyric analysis is real pedagogy, not entertainment. Hindi film songs are rhymed, repeat key grammar in catchy form, and use Hindustani at conversational register, perfect for Module 2 fluency drills. We use Lata Mangeshkar / Mohammed Rafi / Kishore Kumar classics (clearer diction, slower tempo) plus Arijit Singh / Shreya Ghoshal modern repertoire. New films release every Friday at GSC, TGV, and Lotus Five Star Pavilion Bukit Jalil, built-in homework.

  • Formal vs colloquial register: choose deliberately

Hindi has three sharply distinct registers: Sanskritised शुद्ध हिंदी (used in news anchors' scripts, government documents, academic essays), conversational Hindustani (Bollywood dialogue, street talk, Hindi WhatsApp), and Persianised Urdu-leaning prose (poetry, Lucknow / Hyderabad cultural register). A learner who only drills Bollywood lyrics sounds fluent at chai stalls but cannot read a newspaper editorial; one who only drills DD News sounds robotic at a Diwali gathering. Default plan: 60% Hindustani in the first 12 months, then introduce Sanskritised register from Module 3.

  1. 01

Children, Year 1 to Year 6 (ages 7-12)

Tingkatan-age learners typically combine Hindi with PT3 / SPM workload. Recommended: one 90-minute Hindi session per week, focused on Bollywood-lyric Module 2 drills (high motivation, low fatigue). Hindi is NOT an SPM subject.
