The role

What you will do as an online IGCSE tutor

  • Plan every lesson around the learner's board, syllabus code and tier, for example Chemistry 0620 Extended or Edexcel Mathematics Higher.
  • Teach learners to read command words such as state, describe, explain, calculate and evaluate, and to shape each answer to what the mark scheme rewards.
  • Prepare worksheets, topic drills and timed past-paper sets as part of each lesson, matched to the learner's syllabus and exam series.
  • Mark practice answers against the official mark scheme, show where marks were gained and lost, and set the next target from that evidence.
  • Record every session in the educator app, then write a brief progress note, for example which 0580 topic is now secure, for the learner and anyone who signed them up.

What we look for

  • Deep knowledge of one IGCSE subject or more, backed by your own grades, a related degree or a teaching qualification.
  • Working knowledge of the Cambridge IGCSE or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE syllabus you will teach, including its tiers and its grading scale (A* to G or 9 to 1).
  • Clear spoken and written English, since IGCSE papers, mark schemes and lessons all run in English.
  • Comfort teaching through a screen: sharing documents, annotating live and keeping a learner engaged on camera.
  • Some weekday evening or weekend availability in Malaysian time (UTC+8), whether you live in Malaysia or abroad.
  • Patience with Year 7 to Year 11 learners and private candidates, and the discipline to prepare each lesson from the learner's own papers.

What an online IGCSE offer pays

RM35 to RM80 per hour

The band shown above covers every online IGCSE lesson on Edustar, whichever board, subject or tier the learner sits. The figure for that one learner, a Year 10 Extended Chemistry candidate for instance, is written into the offer, and you accept or decline on that number.

Why teach online

Why IGCSE teaching works so well online

Online IGCSE tutor jobs at Edustar link you to learners from international and private schools across Malaysia, one learner at a time. You coach Cambridge papers such as Mathematics 0580 and Physics 0625, or their Pearson Edexcel International GCSE equivalents, from any desk with a steady connection and on hours you choose.

  • 1A lost IGCSE mark usually hides in paperwork, so the shared screen does the heavy lifting: open a 0580 Paper 4 beside its mark scheme and the examiner report, annotate it together with the learner, and the missing method step shows up within seconds.
  • 2Learners arrive from many international schools, each with its own term dates, coursework deadlines and choice of board. Teaching online lets one tutor serve that whole spread from a single desk.
  • 3The two boards reward different habits. Cambridge Extended and Edexcel Higher papers each carry their own command words and mark allocation, and a tutor fluent in that language is exactly who these learners book.
  • 4IGCSE bookings land in the late afternoon and at weekends on Malaysian time (UTC+8). Those hours sit comfortably beside a day job, postgraduate study or life in another time zone.
  • 5A matching team does the searching for you, pairing you with learners by subject, tier and schedule, and the network you join already counts thousands of Edustar tutors across Malaysia. Your energy stays on Core and Extended syllabus work.
Your online classroom

The online classroom an IGCSE lesson needs

  • Your own laptop or desktop on a stable connection, plus a webcam and a headset whose mic picks you up clearly, so walking a learner through a Physics 0625 circuit never stalls on unfamiliar kit.
  • A PDF reader or digital whiteboard with live annotation, so units, working and significant figures can be marked while the learner writes.
  • A split-screen routine: the official mark scheme on one side, the learner's answer on the other, so every mark awarded or dropped is visible to both of you.
  • A shared folder for each learner holding school assessments, timed attempts and corrected scripts, so progress through the Core or Extended tier sits in one place.
  • A calendar tracking each learner's school terms and exam series (May/June or October/November). International school terms follow dates of their own, separate from the KPM school calendar.

Teaching the Alternative to Practical paper through a webcam

The science papers ask for hands-on skill that a screen seems to hide. Cambridge Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625 each offer Paper 6, Alternative to Practical, where candidates read a burette, plot a graph by hand, name a source of error and suggest an improvement. Learners who only ever click through slides lose easy marks here.

The fix is to keep the pencil on paper. Ask the learner to plot results on real graph paper during the lesson, then hold the finished sheet up to the webcam, where scale choice, axis labels and a smooth best-fit line all fit in one frame. Redraw the corrected version on your side with a stylus or under a document camera, one plotted cross at a time, so the learner watches where each point belongs.

Photographs of real apparatus carry the rest. A clear image of a thermometer, a measuring cylinder at eye level or a meniscus lets the learner take readings to the correct precision, and the misread scale shows up long before exam day.

  • Graph paper and a sharp pencil on the learner's desk every science lesson
  • Apparatus photographs saved per topic for repeated reading drills
  • Practical slips logged per learner: units, precision, anomalous results

Weeks one to four as an online IGCSE tutor

Week one belongs to the profile. Name each board and syllabus code you teach, mark Core or Extended (Foundation or Higher for Edexcel 4MA1 Mathematics, a common request alongside 4PH1 Physics), and list the evenings you keep open on Malaysian time.

Your first offer then names the learner's year, board, subject and hour. Once accepted, the opening lesson is diagnostic: ask for the latest school assessment and one recent past paper, mark a section together on screen, and agree the two or three topics that cost the most marks.

By the third and fourth weeks a pattern settles. Many tutors run one topic lesson and one timed section per week for each learner, with a short progress note after every session. A second or third learner can join whenever you open more hours, and you decide how far to grow.

Exam series, school mocks and Malaysian time

IGCSE demand follows two calendars at once. Most Cambridge candidates in Malaysia enter the summer series in May and June or the winter series in October and November, and their international schools set mocks, coursework deadlines and holidays on dates of their own. The busiest stretch for most Year 11 learners runs from the start of mocks to the final paper.

Tutors living abroad slot in well. A lesson at eight in the evening in Kuala Lumpur lands at lunchtime in London, mid-afternoon in Dubai and late evening in Sydney, so a tutor in almost any zone can hold a regular weekday slot and a weekend morning.

  • Weekday sessions cluster after school, roughly late afternoon to late evening
  • Saturday and Sunday mornings fill early in the months before each series
  • School holidays suit longer past-paper sittings under timed conditions
  • Private candidates sitting outside a school often book across the whole year

The records a strong online IGCSE tutor keeps

Good notes make every lesson start in the right place. A strong tutor keeps a simple tally per learner: marks gained and dropped by topic, the command words that still trip them, and the questions worth repeating a fortnight later. That tally shapes the next worksheet and the next progress note.

Tier evidence matters too. Schools decide whether a learner enters Core or Extended, and a clear record of timed scores on the harder questions gives the learner real evidence to bring to that conversation with their teachers. Edustar supplies the video-call room; your files make each session in it count.

Questions

Questions IGCSE tutors ask

Do I need to teach both Cambridge and Edexcel?

One board is enough, and both is a strength. Your profile lists the boards and syllabus codes you cover, and Edustar sends you learners who sit exactly those papers.

Can I apply from outside Malaysia?

Yes. Every IGCSE session happens over video, which means your desk can sit in Malaysia or in another country. Timetables follow Malaysian time (UTC+8) and are settled with each learner.

Who prepares the teaching materials?

You do, as part of every lesson: lesson plans, worksheets, topic drills and past-paper practice suited to the learner's syllabus, tier and exam series.

How many hours a week do I teach?

That number is yours to set. Hours are part-time, and you accept only offers that fit your week. Demand for IGCSE help peaks after school on weekdays and across Saturday and Sunday.

How it works

From application to your first IGCSE learner

  1. Step 01

    Send your IGCSE application

Applying costs nothing and takes under a minute. Four fields cover it: your full name, an inbox we can reach, WhatsApp, and where you are based. IGCSE tutors can apply in any season, since recruitment never closes.

  2. Step 02

List your boards and syllabus codes

An email link opens your full profile on the educator app. Add each IGCSE subject with its board and code, the tiers you teach, your qualifications and your documents.

  3. Step 03

Test your kit on a real paper

Open a past-paper PDF beside its mark scheme, then check your camera, headset and annotation tool, exactly as a live IGCSE lesson will run.

  4. Step 04

    Accept an IGCSE learner

Each offer arrives matched to your subject, tier and timetable, with its rate shown up front so you decide before accepting. Billing sits with Edustar: the learner receives the invoice, and your payment follows each validated session.
