Why teach online

Why online suits science teaching at Edustar

Online science tutor jobs at Edustar match you to learners aged 7 to 15 across Malaysia for one-to-one lessons on screen. You teach KSSR Science from Year 1 to Year 6 and KSSM Science across Form 1–3, with SPM Science 1511 for Form 4–5 learners outside the pure science stream. Part-time, remote, and open all year.

  • 1Science on a screen belongs to the tutor who shows it. A coin sinking in a glass of water, a torch beam bending through a clear jar, a bean sprouting on damp tissue: you set each one up at your own desk and the learner watches it happen live.
  • 2A Year 2 pupil meeting living things in a first science topic needs a different tutor from a Form 3 learner tackling electricity and magnetism, so Edustar pairs each offer with the subject, level and hours you name in your profile.
  • 3Bookings cluster in weekday evenings and at weekends on the Malaysian clock (UTC+8). That timetable is the one fixed point, since you can log in from a home anywhere in Malaysia or overseas.
  • 4One tutor and one learner share each screen. A nine-year-old gets short bursts of questions and a quick result to look at, while a Form 2 learner gets room to argue about which variable to keep constant.
  • 5Edustar handles the billing: learners receive the invoice, and each validated session earns your payment, which keeps your hour on teaching science. You join thousands of tutors already working with Edustar across Malaysia.
Your online classroom

The online science classroom you will run

  • A desk that doubles as a small bench: cups, a ruler, a torch, magnets, salt, ice cubes or a plant cutting, whatever the topic of the day calls for, laid out before the call opens.
  • Interactive simulations and short on-screen quizzes that let the learner change one condition, predict what comes next and see the result straight away.
  • A shared whiteboard for labelled diagrams, food chains, the water cycle and tables of results the learner fills in alongside you.
  • Your own computer on stable internet, a webcam, a mic-equipped headset, plus a second view from the learner's camera aimed at the workbook so written answers get checked live.
How it works

From application to your first science lesson

  1. Step 01

    Apply in under a minute

Start with the application form, which asks for the country where you live, a WhatsApp number, an email address and your name. Science tutors can apply whenever they are ready, at no charge.

  2. Step 02

    Build your science profile

Next, open the link Edustar emails you and sign in to the Edustar educator app, where you add the levels you teach (KSSR Year 1–6, KSSM Form 1–3, SPM Science 1511), your qualifications and your documents.

  3. Step 03

    Ready your bench and camera

Gather a starter kit of everyday objects, pick the simulations you like to teach with and test the camera angle that shows a demonstration clearly at a small scale.

  4. Step 04

    Accept a learner who fits

Edustar sends offers matching the levels and hours on your profile, each showing its rate up front. Taking a learner on is your call, offer by offer.

The role

What you do in each lesson

  • Plan every session around one KSSR or KSSM learning standard and one short demonstration that makes it visible on camera.
  • Build the science process skills step by step: observing, classifying, measuring, inferring, predicting and controlling variables.
  • Keep young learners active with a prediction before every demonstration, a question every few minutes and a quick quiz to close the lesson.
  • Build the practice material yourself: worksheets, lesson plans and question sets, with SPM Science 1511 past-paper items for Form 4–5 learners.
  • Read the learner's workbook through the camera and correct units, labels and conclusions on the spot, while the idea is still fresh.

What we look for

  • Sound command of primary and lower secondary science as set out in KSSR and KSSM; a background in a science field or in education strengthens your profile.
  • Explanations a nine-year-old can follow, and the patience to let a learner reach the answer through their own observation.
  • Ease on camera: sharing a screen, running a simulation and talking a learner through a diagram in the same few minutes.
  • Your own computer, stable internet, headset with microphone and webcam, set up in a quiet, well-lit corner.
  • Availability on Malaysian time, usually weekday evenings or weekends, for regular weekly sessions.
Pay

Hourly pay for online science lessons

RM15 to RM40 per hour

This band spans online science work from the first KSSR topics in Year 1 up to the Form 3 KSSM chapters. Each match offered to you states its own pay per hour in writing, so a Year 2 magnets class and a Form 3 electricity class can be weighed side by side before you accept.

One online science lesson, stage by stage

The call opens with a question the learner can answer from memory: what happened to last week's ice cube, or which magnet pole pushed the other away. Two minutes of recall tells you what stayed and gives the learner a quick win before anything new arrives on screen.

Next comes the prediction. You hold the setup up to the webcam, a cup of salty water beside a cup of tap water, and the learner writes a guess in the workbook before you drop the egg in. Then the demonstration runs, slowly, with the camera close enough for the learner to describe exactly what they see.

The middle of the lesson moves to the shared whiteboard. Together you turn the observation into a results table, label a diagram and name the variable you changed. A Form 2 learner might then open a simulation to test the same idea at a scale no kitchen allows.

Practice fills the closing stretch of the hour: a short set of questions in the KSSR or KSSM style, answered in the workbook and held up to the camera for marking. You close by agreeing on one small observation the learner makes at home before the next session.

Learners who book science on screen

A primary pupil curious about microorganisms often learns best with a tutor who can grow bread mould in a sealed bag over a week and show its progress every lesson. Online science suits that rhythm well, since the tutor's own bench carries the experiment from one session to the next.

Form 1 and Form 3 learners frequently register themselves, wanting steady help with topics that build on each other, such as the particle theory of matter leading into heat, or circuits leading into electromagnetism. PBD assessment runs through the school year, so they value a tutor who keeps every week's work tied to the classroom.

Malaysian learners living overseas who follow KSSR or KSSM at home form another steady group. They want lessons timed to Malaysian evenings and a tutor who already teaches with the KSSR and KSSM textbook terms, and a screen session reaches them wherever they are.

  • Primary pupils meeting living things, light, magnets and the phases of the Moon
  • Lower secondary learners working through cells, acids and alkalis, and electricity
  • Learners who registered themselves and want a weekly anchor through the term
  • Learners abroad keeping pace with the Malaysian syllabus

Habits that make an online science tutor stand out

Strong online science tutors rehearse every demonstration off camera first, checking that the colour change shows up under their own lighting and that the result fits inside the frame. They keep a spare of anything fragile within reach, so a cracked cup costs ten seconds.

They also speak in the vocabulary of the textbook the learner carries. When the KSSM book says manipulated variable and responding variable, those are the words on the whiteboard, which makes the lesson feel familiar the next morning in class.

Above all, these tutors hand the thinking to the learner. They ask why the shadow grew longer, wait for the answer, and let a wrong prediction stand long enough for the demonstration to correct it. Learners remember the experiments they argued about.

What goes into your science lesson notes

Once the screen share closes, you write up what the science lesson covered for the learner to keep, and when the learner is a pupil in Year 1 to 6 registered by a parent or guardian, that adult reads the same write-up. A good science note names the learning standard covered, the experiment watched and the process skill the learner practised, such as inferring or measuring.

Useful notes also record one thing the learner can now explain in their own words and one idea to revisit. Over a term these notes become a clear map of the KSSR or KSSM topics covered, and they help the learner see their own progress toward PBD tasks at school. At any point in the term the learner can ask Edustar for a different science tutor, and that change costs them nothing.

Questions

Questions from science tutors

Can I teach science for Edustar while living outside Malaysia?

Yes. Science tutors living overseas can apply for this online role. Sessions are timed to Malaysia (UTC+8) and cluster in weekday evenings and weekends there, so set your availability around those hours.

Which science levels and syllabi will I teach?

KSSR Science for Year 1–6, KSSM Science for Form 1–3 and SPM Science 1511 for Form 4–5 learners outside the pure science stream. School-based assessment (PBD) now measures progress in primary and lower secondary, so lessons build skills the classroom teacher assesses all year.

How do I keep a young learner focused through a screen?

Short demonstrations, quick questions and visible results. Ask for a prediction, run the demonstration, then have the learner record what happened in the workbook and hold it up to the camera. Ten minutes of watching becomes ten minutes of doing.

What do I need for demonstrations at home?

Everyday objects you prepare at your desk: water, cups, salt, magnets, a torch, seeds, a mirror. Interactive simulations cover what a desk cannot show, such as the solar system or a circuit with many components.

Who books the lessons, and how many hours will I teach?

Lower secondary learners often arrange lessons themselves, and for primary pupils the booking usually comes from whoever registers them. You choose your hours, take the offers that suit them and grow your timetable at your own pace.
