East Malaysia is two states and four tutoring towns on Borneo: Kuching and Miri in Sarawak, Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan in Sabah. SPM Sains Tulen is the shared core in all four, and each town adds its own layer. Kuching, the Sarawak capital on the Sarawak River, pairs downtown mission schools such as St Joseph's School Kuching with four Chinese independent schools on the UEC track, plus Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level at Lodge International School. Sarawak primaries have taught Science and Mathematics in English since the 2020 Year 1 cohort, so a Kuching primary tutor works bilingually. Miri, about 800km north-east of Kuching, uses English as the common language across its cohorts and adds Tenby International School Miri and the Curtin University Malaysia foundation programme. Kota Kinabalu, Sabah's coastal capital, has the UEC stream at Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School and Kian Kok Middle School, IGCSE and A-Level at Sayfol International School Kota Kinabalu, and MUET and IELTS learners around Universiti Malaysia Sabah. In Sandakan, the east-coast port, Mandarin runs from four SJK(C) primaries to UEC papers at Yu Yuan Secondary School, while SMK Tinggi Sandakan carries Sains Tulen and Form 6.
Every lesson in East Malaysia is reached by road: car, Grab, city buses and minibuses. Inside each town the drives are short. Padungan, BDC and Tabuan Jaya sit 15–25 minutes from most Kuching schools, and Likas and Luyang the same from most Kota Kinabalu schools. Miri's estates are 15–20 minutes from the city centre, and Sandakan's Batu belt is 10–20 minutes from the town centre. Between towns the distances call for a flight: Kuching to Miri is about 800km, Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan about 380km across the Crocker Range. Tutors base home lessons in one town and teach learners in the other towns, and in districts such as Serian, Bau, Tuaran and Papar, online.
Home lessons cluster south of the river in Tabuan Jaya, BDC and Stutong, 15–25 minutes by car from most schools, with Petra Jaya a further 15–20 minutes across. SPM Sains Tulen for SMK Green Road, SMK Padungan and SMK Batu Lintang fills weekday evenings. Chung Hua Middle School No. 1 learners book UEC subjects taught in Mandarin, and Lodge International School in Tabuan Desa brings Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level.
Tutor jobs in KuchingLikas, Damai and Luyang form the home-lesson belt, 15–25 minutes by car from most schools, with Penampang and Putatan a further 15–25 minutes south-east. SMK Likas and SMK Putatan candidates book SPM Sains Tulen. Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School and Kian Kok Middle School need Mandarin-medium maths and science. The UMS campus, 20–30 minutes north, supplies MUET and IELTS learners, and Sayfol International School Kota Kinabalu covers IGCSE and A-Level.
Tutor jobs in Kota KinabaluLessons run in the Lutong, Riam, Krokop and Pujut estates, 15–20 minutes by car from the city centre. SMK Lutong, SMK Riam Road and SMK Pujut supply SPM Sains Tulen candidates, and SMK Tinggi Miri adds STPM. Tenby International School Miri in Bandar Baru Permyjaya follows Cambridge IGCSE from Year 7. Curtin University Malaysia in Senadin, a 20–25 minute drive from town, brings foundation maths, IELTS and academic English.
Tutor jobs in MiriMost sessions are at-home along the Batu belt (Mile 1.5 to Mile 8), Bandar Indah and Bandar Pasaraya, 10–20 minutes by car from the town centre. Mandarin runs from primary to UEC here: SJK(C) Chi Hwa, SJK(C) Pui Yuk, SJK(C) Yuk Choi and SJK(C) Chung Hwa, then Senior Middle 1–3 papers at Yu Yuan Secondary School. SMK Tinggi Sandakan and SMK Elopura carry SPM Sains Tulen, and IGCSE learners study online.
Tutor jobs in SandakanIn Sibu, tutors teach along the Rajang riverfront, in Sungai Merah near the University of Technology Sarawak campus, and in the Salim, Bukit Lima and Sibu Jaya housing areas. Requests come from Mandarin-medium UEC students, Form 6 classes preparing STPM, SPM candidates at national secondaries and primary pupils from SJK (C) schools. Online sessions reach Kapit, Kanowit and Mukah.
Tutor jobs in SibuBintulu tutors split their week between the town side near the Kemena River and the industrial township of Kidurong to the north. Students at SMK Bintulu, SMK Kidurong and SM Kai Dee book SPM, STPM, MUET and UEC subjects, Cambridge-track learners at the two international schools want IGCSE English and maths, and UPM Sarawak undergraduates on Jalan Nyabau often teach alongside their degrees.
Tutor jobs in BintuluOn Sabah's east coast, Tawau tutors work between the commercial streets of Sabindo and Fajar and the housing estates of Kuhara, Kabota and Titingan. Students come from SMK classrooms, MRSM Tun Mustapha, Kolej Tingkatan Enam Tawau and Sabah Chinese High School, so SPM, UEC and STPM all feature. Diploma learners near Balung add MUET and online sessions to the mix.

Hourly, for every session
Home lessons cover Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Miri and Sandakan. Online sessions reach the districts more than an hour's drive out: Bau, Lundu and Serian from Kuching, and Tuaran, Papar and Ranau from Kota Kinabalu. A tutor in one town also teaches learners in the other three online, so a Borneo timetable mixes both formats.
Three towns have it on site. Lodge International School in Tabuan Desa, Kuching, and Sayfol International School Kota Kinabalu run Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level, and Tenby International School Miri runs IGCSE from Year 7. Sandakan learners on these syllabuses book online, and learners in the Sepilok corridor add to that online caseload.
All four book Mandarin. Kuching has four UEC schools plus Bahasa Cina at SPM in SMJK Tinggi Kuching on Jalan Mathie. Kota Kinabalu needs Mandarin-medium maths and science for Sabah Tshung Tsin and Kian Kok. Sandakan runs from primary reading to UEC Chinese papers at Yu Yuan, and Miri centres on SJK(C) reading and Bahasa Cina 6354.
Yes. Sarawak primaries have taught both subjects in English since the 2020 Year 1 cohort, and from 2026 Form 1 Mathematics and the sciences are in English too. Tutors in Kuching and Miri who explain concepts in English and Bahasa Melayu fit Tahun 1–6 and Tingkatan 1–3 learners, whose lower-secondary work is assessed through PBD.
Apply if you can carry SPM Sains Tulen in one of the four towns and one more strength Borneo asks for: Mandarin-medium teaching, MUET and IELTS coaching, or Cambridge IGCSE. Edustar matches you with learners nearby and online across Sarawak and Sabah.
